SAV KILLZ: Bangers and B-Sides (Free w/ option to Donate) (UNDERGROUND HIP HOP)

Normally I'd write a little more about an album, comp, or mix tape, but I'm pushed for time atm. Anyway, Bangers and B-Sides is a solid mix tape with a nice line up. Both hard copies are available, and digital versions are 'name your price'. Go peep a listen. FFO: underground raw hip hop. Link below.

ANCIENT VISIONZ: FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS

I guess to flow with the general theme of evolving and trying something new for the site, here is another update with some thoughts we are considering for Ancient Visionz when we return from vacation.

We may, and may, create a Wackbook like page, which would be used to promote ourselves and friends across the scenes. I'm sure AZ readers or listeners of my shows are aware of the deep love I hold for Wackbook, ughh.

Other considerations include: Actually using the Tumblr account we created way back to reblog content from the Ancient Visionz site. Possible 5 star or 10 star rating for music/movie reviews and such, or an alternative such as a thumbs up, or does this make you sweat with excitement, or does it make you hungry or puke?

ANCIENT VISIONZ DIVERSIFYING FURTHER

Peace all, I'm back with another update before winter vacation. Many of these updates were wrote fast and quick so grammar or wording weren't the primary focus. It is a busy time atm, as I'm sure it is for everyone during the holiday season, so speed and quickness with posts were the major concern before leaving for vacation.

The previous post discussed my radio shows maintaining diversity, and now it is time to announce the same approach with Ancient Visionz. We already try to reach a good cross selection with underground music, film, and comics, but in-order for us to grow, we need to take it further.

During conversations with friends in underground metal/punk/hip hop and indie film, it became clear that generating support for all these communities outside of the mainstream, or top tier sections of the underground has become increasingly difficult. Myself and Patrick who run the site have tried every idea imaginable either through my radio shows or Ancient Visionz. The reality is we need to make some changes or continue struggling along, so an evolution is required. It is a strategy I've used many times with my radio shows to broaden the genres.

I never envisioned coming to a decision like this, but the only way for the site to grow to be blunt, and hopefully turn people on to the lesser known and more obscure music, and films, are to sadly, also feature the big name bands whether underground or mainstream. When we say mainstream there is a limit, mainstream hip hop is something we will not entertain, as mainstream hip hop is beyond bad. But, maybe if we cover some of the bigger known bands/artists along with popular mainstream ones, we will attract new readers who can then be encouraged to discover the underground aspects, which is where our passion is.

Personally, I do not hold much interest for whatever famous bands are doing or the mainstream. There are some okish songs I like, and some bands are ok, but it is a scene I just don't follow or hold any interest in, as my tastes gravitate to mid tier artists and diy bands. I guess to clarify this for say hip hop and metal: Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, and so on.

Metal: Think the big names in the underground, then with some famous artists from the mainstream. Not something I'm excited to do, but I see little choice with helping the site and our connected projects grow. For example, not everyone in indie film are underground metal heads or punks, so I can't be oh go away you don't like real metal. That behavior is a bit ridiculous, but a bridging gap could be done that would maybe encourage others to explore the bands/artists from the underground scenes or recognize what we hold in common.

In truth, the site will maintain the underground focus, that is always my preference in music, and studying at college leaves me little time to explore what rock star the 3rd is doing, but after discussing this at length with friends in all scenes whom are experiencing the same problems in the underground, then it is the realistic solution to implement for Ancient Visionz.

My radio shows will keep and maintain their underground focus, and diversity through underground genres as always (no changes with them, other than adding various underground genres for the metal/punk show).

But, to be realistic for the Ancient Visionz site and it's growth, myself and Patrick may at times include some of the more known stuff to help us reach new readers.

RADIO SHOWS MAINTAINING MUSICAL DIVERSITY

Hey all, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. Here is the first post concerning my radio shows and the importance of maintaining variety. The posts are very quick due to me rushing for vacation. There are 3-4 more posts coming up in next 2-3 hrs.

Radio Shows:

The closure of Brutal Existence Radio hit my radio shows severely hard. I've experienced the struggles of DIY before when I ran my former punk show/site, and am aware how difficult it can be competing against radio stations. When operating individually, only so much can be done alone. Sure I could relaunch the former punk site/show, but I wish to avoid being type casted in one scene, especially since I network/work/and am friends with a wide range of people, so maintaining diversity is the way forward.

The radio shows remain largely the same as they all feature a wide ranging arc, but The Wastelands is going to continue as a mixed variety show featuring both metal and punk, which means everything from doom, sludge, desert rock, heavy metal, blues, death metal, crust, d-beat, hardcore, grindcore, thrash, hc punk, and so on. The monthly thrash show Crimson Bones is firmly in place.

My main aim with the radio shows including Paradigm Radio (talk radio) are to encourage people to think outside the box and open up to other music. I'm aware there probably never will be unity between different underground music scenes as a whole, but it doesn't mean that Ancient Visionz has to accept that particular scenario, which leads to the following post about forthcoming changes to the Ancient Visionz site.

PASSENGERS - MOVIE REVIEW (SCI-FI, 2016)

Ughh where do I begin with Passengers? Whilst watching the movie I felt like I was a passenger onboard a interstellar turd vessel, lost in the vast vacuum of space, refusing to be flushed away. I actually held some anticipation for Passengers, and I'd argue the first 20-30 mins are interesting, which opens with Chris Pratt awakening from stasis to roam the ship alone. It sets up the first act and is a fairly intriguing introduction. Unfornately, this is where Passengers stops, and transitions into one of the worst movies to hit 2016 after the Ghostbusters reboot. Make no mistake, Passengers is one colossal turd. Jenifer Lawrence demonstrates again why she cannot act and brings down the movie further.

There is a moment where Lawrence and co star Pratt entangle with each other in the ship's canteen. Beyond crud doesn't come close to describing the scene. Another cringe worthy moment near the end involves Lawrence trying to revive Pratt in a medical life pod. Sadly she appears to be throwing a tantrum rather than displaying a degree of heightened emotion.

Lawrence Fisbourne co stars, briefly awakening halfway through the movie to realise that yup I did sign up for this voyage, and so did we the audience. His performance is solid enough, and one of the few highlights in Passengers. It is hard to recommend Passengers as a movie to watch during the holidays, but I guess some minor positives are: the ship looks cool, and Arthur the android barman is mildly amusing

A poor film, which should be renamed 2 people run around and entangle a bit, whilst the audience find themselves trapped in a turd starship for 2hrs. To sum up, it's butt.

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE (SHORT REVIEW, NO SPOILERS)

Normally I'd write a deeper, in depth review, but it has been a crazy period recently. Here is my quick look at Star Wars Rogue One. Last year I fell to SW fanboyism surrounding the hype with The Force Awakens, and was as guilty as anyone for adding to the hysteria. I watched it 4 times to see if I could enjoy anything other than a few aspects, and no, it was nothing but a mediocre movie, which in true JJ Abrams style appeared to be a rehash of earlier films, then repackaged for the mainstream to eat up. Whilst those of us who actually like good acting and more developed stories thought "man.... Jar Jar now makes films".

This festive season we are graced with the first of the anthology films, which hadn't received the same hype as episode 7. Rogue One feel likes a SW movie, evident with the characters, story, and sequences. The acting is good and better than the sub par standard displayed in The Force Unawakens. The characters are interesting because they actually fight and earn their struggles in a gritty environment, conveying the sense of rebellion and oppressor.

I guess we are gifted with a well rounded and grounded movie that doesn't suffer any sugar coating, and it is clear to see that Rogue one is a much more developed and substantial SW movie.

Ok fan boying aside, Rogue One will appeal to those who disliked A New Hope Awakens/Kylo Struggles To Strike Back. There is one scene, the scene everyone is talking about, which yes, is worth the wait. Rogue One is the next best SW film after the OT, and Sci-Fi nerdom aside, it is actually good, and deserves merit.

REPULSIVE VISION - LOOK PAST THE GORE... AND SEE THE ART (OLD SCHOOL DM/DEATHMETAL, REVIEW)

I wanted to write this review asap before going on vacation for Greedmas and sitting on a toilet for 2 weeks pooping out turds from copious amounts of Xmas dinners. Repulsive Vision, a name probably apt for describing an X Factor carol service, but in this instance are a old school death metal band playing straight up direct in your face mosh.

The band contacted Ancient Visionz a few days ago during my thrash radio show, and I liked what I heard. The music is tight, flows together nicely to deliver a raw thrashy barrage of old school death metal with notable hc punk influences, giving Repulsive Vision a rawer edge.

If I was to attach a quote to Repulsive Vision's album, 'Look Past The Gore and See The Art', then it would be "ohhhhhhhh". It is the same feeling when I hear hc punk, d-beat, and crust punk, I tend to react with a "ohhhhhhh", and am quickly wanting to participate in one of my favorite sports, mosh pit mattress shield walls.

There is a good tempo maintained throughout Look Past The Gore and See The Art, and powerful boss riffage and accompanying drums matching the rhythm, which should please those who enjoy swinging their heads around. Vocally it's good, not a band where the music is rad, but you want to turn off the singer. The classic horror themed approach makes Repulsive Vision a well rounded band, complementing each other nicely.

Look Past The Gore and See The Art does feel like a horror movie you would see on TV with hordes of the undead running towards you whilst the band provide the soundtrack.

Punks will enjoy Repulsive Vision for the raw, thrashy, speed, and hc punk vibe that I can hear in their sound. Therefore, the band in our opinion will appeal to both punks and metalers.

To sum up, Repulsive Vision offer a rad and raw, thrashing, direct, hc punk influenced fast paced brand of old school death metal. Highly recommended. Look Past The Gore and See The Art is available from Bret Hard Records on the 13th of January. Make sure to keep a note of the release date to help mosh away those winter blues.
