Here  is  a  new  interview  with  Assault  who   come  out  of  Singapore's  death, thrash  metal  scene. The  band  is  getting ready to  release  their  debut  full-length  "The Fallen Reich"  so  anyone  into  death, thrash metal   should  defintly  give  this  band  a listen today.

Interview   with Clarence  vocalist  of  Assault   done  by   Patrick

1.Hello   Clarence   how  are  things  going  with you  these  days? At  what  age  were you  when  you  discovered  metal  music?

Clarence – Hi Patrick! I’m fine and busy altogether these days with the band upcoming album promotion and shows. I discovered metal music back in 2004 when I was 14 years old; I listen to nu-metal band initially such as (Linkin Park, Disturbed etc). It was only a year later my high-school teacher introduce me proper metal bands like (Metallica, Mayhem, Emperor etc) , there is no turning back from then on…..

2.Who  were  some  of  the  first  bands  you  discovered  and  who are  some of  the  current  bands  you  listen  to?

C – Some of the first bands that was introduced to me was (Metallica, Mayhem , Emperor, Satryicon, Darkthrone etc) majority of the band was from the Norwegian Black Metal scene aside from Metallica, some of the bands I’m currently listening to now are – Mastodon, Demonic Resurrection, Batushka, Vader etc…

3.Clarence  you  all formed  Assault  in  2006  when  did you  all get the  idea  to  start this  band? And  what  is  the  current  line up  of  the  band?

C – I had the idea of forming a band back in early 2006 when I discovered the Swedish metal band “In Flames”, because I’m amazed by their fusion of mixing Death Metal with Melodic guitar riffs, thus in June 2006 I started Assault with our ex-drummer “Farid Then” and lead guitarist “Hanesh”.

We had some line-up changes back and forth and the current line-up is our longest line-up till date.
Vocalist – Clarence Chong
Lead Guitar – Hanesh
Rhythm Guitar – Yuda
Bass – Syaz
Drum - Noh

4.For  the  readers  who  have   never  heard  Assault's music  how  would  you  best  describe  it? And  who  are  some  of the  bands  biggest  influences?

C – Fans will expect an in-your-face Death and Thrash Metal album combining with melodic riffs which we are known for in our debut EP, some of the songs in the album are really heavy which I’m expecting some of our long time fans will be surprised . Some of our biggest influences for this album are bands like – Vader, Behemoth , Kreator , At the Gates , ChthoniC etc.

5.Assault  is  getting  ready to  release  their  debut  full length  "The Fallen  Reich" how  long  did  it  take  the  band  to  write  the  music  for  this  release? Does  the  whole  band  take  part  in  the  writing  process  or does  one  member  usually  write  everything?

C- The writing process started back in late 2012 after we completed the touring cycle for our debut EP “The Exceptions of the Rebellions”, the entire band took part in the writing process and usually I’m the one who came up with the lyrics once we have finalized all the song structure. It was not until middle of 2013 when we started the actual recording process, there was some delay to the recording session because of personal commitment within the band. The entire recording took around 3 years to complete which we knowledge it kind of too long for us, in early 2016 we got Cedric Chew to mixed and mastered our album.

6.Clarence  you  handle  the  vocals  for the  band  so  I  figure  you  take  care  of  writing the  lyrics  what  are  some  subjects  you  write  about  on the  new  release?

C – The lyrical concept with the new album is closely related to what transpire in the World War II, personally for me I’m really into history and particularly warfare material, thus I seek to gain inspiration from the major events that happens in the World War II, because lyrically this connects to the music we wrote for this album, which is meant to taken towards a darker approach.

7.Does  Assault  get  to  play  live  very  often ? What  have  been  some  of the  bands most  memorable  shows  over the  years?

C – The band has a routine touring cycles for all our releases, we been pretty active live from 2010 to 2012 to promote and establish the band live show. Some of our most memorable show till date is our first overseas show in the Philippines. The crowd’s response was overwhelming and at the same time they are very receptive of us because we’re relatively an upcoming band. The second memorable show for us is Decapitated & Nervecell Singapore show, which we are the opening band, till date this is one of the largest show we have played.

8.Are  their  any  upcoming  shows  or tours  in  support  of  The Fallen  Reich ? If  yes   where  will  the  band  be  playing  and  who  are  some  bands you  will  be  sharing the  stage  with?

C – We will be having an album launch show in Singapore most probably in May, after that we will be touring intensively throughout Asia. One of the confirmed shows will be in Mongolia (Noise Festival) in September; we are in the midst of discussing and firming up the dates with promoter from India, Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan.  Regarding on the bands we could be playing with might vary; it could be some local bands or probably an international headliner?

9.Assault comes  out  of  Singapore's metal  scene  what  is your  opinion  of the  scene  in  Singapore  over  the  years?

C – The metal scene in Singapore has been very much established since the early 90s, with early old guards bands such as (Impiety, Adhorer, Rudra , Vrykolakas etc) these band laid the foundation for the metal scene in Singapore. Some of these bands such as Impiety & Rudra are still actively touring and releasing new materials. In recent years the scene has become  even developed probably because nowadays with technology, youngster get the exposure to metal music thus more are coming into the scene and actively attending shows and also some of our local metal acts (Wormrot) are gaining international exposure thus there is a upward trend that the community is getting bigger.
