Interview with BackStabber done by Patrick

1. Hello, how are things going in Canada this week? Please introduce yourself to the readers?
Hi Everyone, My name is Christian Mongrain Theriault and I'm the guitarist/vocalist and founder of the Death Metal band Backstabber. I started Backstabber as a solo project in 2012 and in 2015 we switched to a full band and started playing shows in the local area. We have released a Demo entitled Revenge in January 2016 and a Single and music video for the track Subterranean in 2017. We are very proud to have the opportunity to talk about the new album Conspiracy Theorist, which is due February 15th.

2. When did you first start listening to metal music and who were the first bands you discovered? Who are some of your current favorite bands?
I started listening to metal at around 10-11 years old, a friend of mine introduced me to the album then my uncle offered me Megadeth mixtapes for my birthday. It took me 2 years before discovering Sepultura and I got addicted to them for another year before diving into death metal with bands like Deicide, Deeds of Flesh, Death, Nile, etc.. As of today, I'm still listening to my old classics but also bands such as Meshuggah, Gojira, MGLA, Behemoth, etc. And also "local" bands like Augury, Beyond Creation, Cryptopsy, Despised Icon, Kataklysm, etc..

3. When did you first get the idea to start BackStabber and are you happy with how everything is going so far? How did you all choose BackStabber as the name of the band?
I started Backstabber in 2012 after I left my former band; Cryptik Howling. There was certainly some bitterness at the time of my departure from C.H. and Backstabber is some kind of response to this. I wanted the rest of the band to know that I was angry and the Revenge Demo is all about that but I'm not that spiteful so I quickly moved on to other themes and aspirations for our music. I had the project on hold for 3 years from 2012 to 2015 because I joined Depths of Hatred and moved to Montreal. It's only by 2015 that I moved back home and started working on Backstabber again, this time with a lineup and the desire to play shows. We decided to finish and publish the Revenge Demo and then moved on to create Conspiracy Theorist.

4. What is the current line up of the band? And for the readers who have never heard BackStabber's music how would you best describe it? Who would you say are the bands biggest influences?
The current lineup consists of myself (Christian Mongrain Theriault) on guitars and vocals, Eric Seguin on bass and back vocals and Patrick Gagne on drums. As for the music, I'd say we tend to move around the Death Metal spectrum a lot, mostly influenced by 90's Florida's death metal with some hints of Swedish Death. I can't deny some influences such as Deicide in songs like Geo-Engineering or Hypocrisy when talking about the cover art and lyrical concept while guitars are somewhat reminiscent of Death's Symbolic/Individual era.

5. Conspiracy Theorist is the band's debut release which will be self-released in late February did the band plan to self-release the debut or would you like to find a label to work with on future releases? Like most new bands, we felt this urge to "exist" which led us to release C.T. on our own. That being said, we would love to find a label willing to release and distribute physical copies of the album and of course future works too. We tend to see this album as our business card.

6. Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything? How long does it usually take to complete one song?
I try to incorporate everyone into the writing process as much as possible and I handle the main arrangements. Composition in itself is not that long or hard, it has more to do with getting in a good mood for creation than trying to create as much as possible. We usually lay down rhythm guitars, bass and drums first, then when all is set, we start to work on vocals and solos.

7. Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music and what are some subjects you all wrote about on the debut release?
I usually write the lyrics on my own except for My Disclosure which I wrote with Eric (Bass/Back Vocals). The lyrical themes explored in C.T. vary a lot, ranging from theories about the hollow earth to the assassination of JFK or the domination of the banking cartels. We wanted to have an overlook on many conspiracies so we only scratched the surface of those stories, leaving the reader intrigued and eager to learn more about all those subjects.

8.Has BackStabber had the opportunity to play very many live shows so far? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows so far? We played a good bunch of shows in the local scene and we've been part of the "Ontario Death Fest IV" in 2016 and part of the "Festival de Musique Émergente" in 2018 alongside Cattle Decapitation and Depths of Hatred.

9. Are there any shows or tours planned in support of Conspiracy Theorist if yes where will the band be playing? Who are some bands you will be sharing the stage with?
Right now there are a couple dates announced throughout the local scene, in Ville-Marie, Rouyn-Noranda, and La Sarre. We're working on more dates for eastern Canada and are open to any offers. There are many bands releasing new music in Canada this year and hopefully, we'll find a perfect fit to work on a Quebec/Ontario tour for this fall.

10. Besides working in BackStabber do any of the members currently play in any other bands or solo projects? If yes please tell the readers a little about them?
I do play backup guitars for Die Some More, a Doom metal band from home. I also recorded their first demo released last year entitled "The Crimson E.P.". Apart from that we're pretty much all focussed on Backstabber.

11. Besides death and thrash metal do you listen to any other underground forms of music? If yes what are some of your favorite genres and who are some of your favorite artists and bands?
We're into almost anything metal but mostly extreme metal such as Death, Black & Grindcore. I personally am into any genre of music also such as Blues, Rock, Rap, Soul, Classical, etc.. If I was to press shuffle on my mp3 player, you would have something like 80% Metal and 20% "What the Fuck"!

12. When you need to take a break from working on new music or band business what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I'm not a huge player but I sometimes play Fallout, Starcraft, etc. I also enjoy reading, whether its books or through my phone and spending time outside.

13. Besides music we are huge movie fans here do you enjoy watching movies? If yes what is your favorite movie genre?
I grew up watching action movies with Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Willis, etc.. Now I'm much more into comedies, science-fiction and documentary film.

14. What are your all-time favorite movies and what are some of your current favorite movies?
that's a hard one but I'll go with Stargate, both the movies and the television show. Lately, I would say that I really dig the new Star Trek movies, there are 3 movies already from J.J. Abrams and they are all very good.

15. Do you have any favorite actresses and actors that you like to watch? Are there any directors that you enjoy watching the most? Anything J.J. Abrams touches turns to gold in my opinion. As for actors I like Dwayne Johnson, he is very versatile. I also always loved Mike Myers too.

16. Thank you for taking the time to fill this interview out do you have any final comments for the readers?
