Interview  with Overt Enemy  done by Patrick

1.Hello how are things going in Texas this week with you and the band? Please introduce yourself to the readers?

It is hotter than hell in Texas this summer! Neck deep in gigs, writing new stuff and promoting our new CD Possession which comes out Aug 9th 2019.

Overt Enemy is: Leo "Lizard" Ortiz - Guitar/Leads Vocals, Rob Hahn - Guitar/Backing Vocs, Laura "Slayerella" Ortiz - Bass, Jaime Ayala - Drums.

2.When did you first start listening to thrash and metal music in general? Who were the first bands you discovered and who are some of your current favorite bands?

We've all been listening to metal since the late 80's and early 90's. Bands like Sepultura, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Ozzy, Sabbath, Suicidal Tendencies, etc got us all hooked!
Current favorite bands include Gorgos, Power Trip, War Curse, Confused, Archangel AD, Panteon, Unholy Desecration, Jinjer, Shattered Son and a ton of bands in the "Rio Grande Valley" South Texas area.

3.When did you first get the idea to start Overt Enemy  and are you happy with how everything is going so far?

Overt Enemy started after Slayer's Jeff Hanneman passed away as a tribute to one of our favorite guitarists of all time. We originally intended to do one show but kept getting asked back to do more gigs and things spiraled out of control from there...what can we say...people love FKN SLAAAYYYERR! We have all been in bands together over the years writing original music so new songs came naturally. We got asked to write a couple tunes for an indie horror flick called "The Blood Tapes" and decided to keep the tribute thing going and put out our own music at the same time. As of today we couldn't be happier with how we are progressing as an original act and have made new fans all over the world which is pretty mind blowing. Gigs keep getting bigger and better and we know the best is yet to come.

4.What is the current line up of the band and who would you say are the bands biggest influences? For the readers who have never heard Overt Enemy's music how would you best describe it?

Leo - Guitar/Vocals

Rob - Guitar/Vocals

Slayerella - Bass/Vocals

Jaime - Drums

Possession is the next step in Overt Enemy’s evolution as an original act and musical style moving forward blending our thrash, death and groove metal influences with aggressive clean vocal delivery and ass kickin’ Texas attitude.

5.Possession is the bands debut EP. how long did it take the band to write the music for the debut?Does the whole band take part in the writing process or does one member usually write everything?
Actually we released another EP in July 2018 called Inception with 3 songs. Possession was written and recorded over 7 months in total and we finished mixing in April 2019. Writing is a team effort and everyone brings ideas to the table. We beat things up and try to forge strong metal songs that we'd want to listen to and enjoy playing.

6.Who usually handles writing the lyrics for the music? Which usually comes first the lyrics or the music?
Leo & Rob are the lyricists. The order kinda depends on the song. Sometimes we have a strong lyrical idea and build around that and sometimes we have a completed song and have to figure out what lyrics best serve the song. That was the case with Possession. The song was completely recorded and then Rob wrote the lyrics on a 6 hr drive to Laredo Texas. Leo did some revisions and boom. Badass metal jam.

7.Has Overt Enemy played live very often over the years or do you prefer working in the studio? What have been some of the bands most memorable shows over the years?Who are some bands you have had the chance to share the stage with?
We gig constantly mainly on weekends since we all have jobs, family, etc. We love playing live shows especially festivals and other special events. Some of our most memorable shows are the two times we played the Q94.5FM Tailgate Party at 10am, Boomshakalaka Fest with Sons of Texas, a series of Texas dates with 333, The Texas Thrash Bash with Confused and our own Metal Gods annual tribute show that Rob puts together. We love working in the studio but nothing beats playing for hundreds of moshing headbangers \m/

8.Besides the Possession debut release does the band have any other merchandise currently available for the readers? If yes what is currently available and where can the readers purchase the merchandise?
You can get our first EP Inception on all digital platforms right now and we have multiple shirts and other merch available at
Pre-order Possession today we have a limited edition bundle available at

9.What does Underground Metal mean to you?
It means the freedom to write what we want to write without limits.
